Local speech transcription: test the tool and model separately

Myna enters technology preview; Falcon ASR has a different language focus. Verify dictation against your devices and representative examples.

An employee dictates a note instead of typing into a field. Local recognition can be useful when a workflow cannot depend on a continuous connection. An open model alone does not establish a usable workplace tool. October announcements from Ubuntu and TII help separate the model, interface and output review.

Dictation preview has specific boundaries

On 12 October, Ubuntu presented Myna as a technology preview. According to the vendor description, recognition runs locally without internet after a model is downloaded, and the tool neither uploads nor stores audio. Its supported engines differ in languages and hardware requirements. A developing preview does not establish readiness for every operational scenario.

For a pilot, verify the employee’s environment: operating system, microphone, performance and target application. Local dictation ends with text in a field. Persistence, CRM transfer and colleagues’ access belong to another part of the workflow.

Choose a model for the language and task

In its 7 October Hugging Face article, TII introduced Falcon ASR with an Arabic and Emirati-dialect focus, alongside other listed languages. The announcement does not claim Russian support. Recognition figures refer to the author’s evaluation method and datasets, not your conversations.

The publications do not say Falcon is connected to Myna. Their relationship concerns two separate choices: the workplace tool and the language model suitable for the data. Do not transfer a model’s capabilities to another interface without verification.

Test more than a clear sample sentence

Prepare examples you are allowed to process: ordinary speech, names, order references and background noise. Define what the employee checks before saving each result. Distinguish a general wording error from an error in a field that initiates another action.

Assess usability for the actual work: correcting a word, recognizing when transcription is ready and saving a confirmed record. Test loss of connectivity after model installation, restart and another available device. A small trial does not establish universal accuracy. Keep the original test conditions with the result so another reviewer can reproduce it.

Begin with a bounded role

The comparison supports a conditional recommendation: start with recognition as draft input reviewed by a person. Automatically changing an important status requires its own rule and test. Employee responsibility and a correction path remain part of the design even when audio is processed locally.
