The client's brief
Srikesh Datta, based in London, wanted quantitative and qualitative company data brought into Google Sheets. The data could come from financial data sites or through an API, and had to be presented in an agreed format following an .xlsx guideline. The Upwork job was titled "Finance Data Grabbing and News API Integration (with AI Chatbot)", so a news API and an AI chatbot were part of the scope alongside the financial data.
Two more requirements were about day-to-day use. The code needed enough comments and documentation for the team to fix small things themselves. A virtual assistant would be running it, so the client also asked for a way to stop users from viewing or copying the code, such as an authentication code.
How the work went
The first project was handed over to me from another developer, and the client describes it as not an easy one. I resolved many of its issues and finished the tool they wanted. A lot of the work happened on video calls where we went through problems together. Further projects followed, and the collaboration ran from April 2023 to June 2024.
Where this fits
This setup suits a team that already researches companies in Google Sheets and wants the data to arrive in a structure it knows. Comments and documentation let the team handle small fixes without a developer. Code protection is worth settling early: in Google Sheets, what is possible depends on who runs the script and how.
