Google Sheets and Apps Script work from Upwork

What clients needed

Between 2021 and 2025, a steady run of Upwork jobs centred on Google Sheets. In most of them the spreadsheet was already the team's working tool, and the client wanted one manual step gone: push a row into another system, match two sheets, score a form submission, send emails or assemble a report. The jobs are grouped by theme below. All were closed on Upwork as completed; ratings are shown where the client left one.

Jobs by theme

Contact sync

• When a row is added or updated in Google Sheets, a contact is created in Google Contacts automatically. BotFlowz, India; November 2021 and January 2022, both rated 5.0.

Matching sheets

• A menu item or button in the spreadsheet: the script walks through sheet B, finds each order number in sheet A (which has more rows) and fills in the tracking number. Thomas Benner, Germany; December 2021, 5.0.

Form calculations

• A form submission lands in Google Sheets, and a script creates a row on another sheet with the calculated test score. Kooxda, Spain, an education company; December 2021, 4.9.

Emails

Reporting and Looker Studio

• Reconnecting an existing Google Data Studio (now Looker Studio) report to a new data source. Faran Irfan, USA; 2021–2022, 5.0.

External APIs and storage

• Apps Script access to the AdWords API, using OAuth2 as an external service, and to Looker: Looks, SQL Runner, Redshift, Presto. Spothero, Chicago, USA; 2021–2022.
• An Apps Script that fetches files and uploads them to an Amazon S3 bucket. The client could not share credentials, so the script was tested against my own test bucket. Idearise, India; 2023–2024, 5.0.
• A Python script that reads files from Google Drive into a MySQL database, so a CRM can list them and open them in an iframe in view-only mode, like Google Drive does. WAN Solutions Group, Malaysia; 2022–2023.

Templates and NDA work

• Tasks for a consulting company on the condition that the solution stays entirely in Google Sheets. Drifter Consulting, Portugal; November to December 2021, 5.0, with a follow-up until May 2022, 4.7.
• Converting pre-made Google Sheets templates into new ones. Splittimelines, India; 2022–2025.

When this approach makes sense

A script inside the spreadsheet works well when the process already lives in Google Sheets and moving it into a separate system would be premature. The team keeps its familiar file, and code takes over the repetitive step. Once data volume, the number of users or access requirements grow, it is time to talk about a database or a proper integration.
