Mobile subscriptions on the web: verify payment and access handoffs
FastSpring describes direct sales; Google Play sets US external-link conditions. Understand the added responsibilities in the customer journey.
A customer purchases a subscription on the website and then opens the app. Alternatively, they leave the app for a web checkout and return. In both cases, the product must identify who should receive access and handle an unfinished purchase. September and October FastSpring articles are useful alongside the current Google Play program conditions.
Two routes start in different places
On 28 September, FastSpring distinguished Web2App and App2Web: a web purchase before installation and a link from an application to external checkout. This describes direct-channel strategies rather than uniform rules for every platform and country.
Map the actual journey first. Where does the customer create an account? How does the app establish that the subscription belongs to that person? What happens when they pay on another device? These questions precede the choice of an external payment button. Otherwise a convenient checkout may end with a support request about missing access.
External links do not remove platform conditions
In its 2 October implementation article, FastSpring discusses Google Play External Content Links for US users. The official Google Play conditions, checked for this analysis, cover app enrollment, regional restrictions, API integration, transaction reporting and applicable fees. This is a current policy document without an established new publication date.
Direct checkout therefore cannot be described as universal freedom from store fees or requirements. Verify the program, region and applicability to the actual app. Vendor marketing claims about other games’ economics do not establish an outcome for your product.

A purchase must become an entitlement
The connection is operational responsibility: an external channel adds handoffs between the purchase, account and application. Define the authoritative payment record and the conditions for granting access. Returning to the app screen alone is not confirmation of a successful transaction.
In a test environment, follow a purchase, rejection, interrupted redirect and repeated notification. Check association with the correct account, access after signing in again and state changes after cancellation or refund. Agree who helps a customer when payment is confirmed but the app has not yet updated.
Decide on the channel after those checks. Suitability depends on program availability, integration and support responsibilities, rather than only the number of steps to payment. Verify the platform’s exact conditions again before launch, since the implementation article is not a substitute for them.
Our mobile application planning guide helps identify the full journey. The rental application project confirms a mobile product without claiming subscription or payment capabilities. For your customer product, discuss payment and access handoffs.
