Social engagement and sales: checking the path from video to deal

How to connect reach and reactions with enquiry quality: funnel stages, CRM data, attribution limits and commercial outcomes.

BusinessPublished:

A video attracts reactions and follower numbers grow, but sales see no change. That alone is not a reason to stop producing content. First establish what the post was meant to achieve and where observation ends: in the feed, on the website, in a conversation or in the CRM.

Cossa reports on a study by DOT and LiveDune about changes in brand content and audience reactions. DOT's own publication provides a primary account of the work. These observations cannot prove that entertaining posts never generate sales: the nature of a comment and a commercial outcome belong to different stages.

The framework below is for businesses that sell through enquiries. Its purpose is to explain gaps between attention and a deal using the company's own data.

Give each piece of content a job

Imagine a software provider publishing a short video about order-processing mistakes. An employee may recognise their problem without yet looking for a new system. The next article explains a possible workflow, while the service page describes its limits and how to start a conversation.

The first video does not have to generate enquiries immediately. It does need a testable role: move a suitable audience towards the next meaningful step. Measuring only views leaves the team unable to see how many people continued. Demanding a sale from every video can lead it to abandon useful early contact too soon.

Before publishing, choose the material's main purpose and an available next step. An introductory piece might link to a process analysis. Someone comparing solutions can examine the service terms. Someone with a defined problem needs a clear enquiry form. The same purchase prompt in all three cases makes assessment harder.

Build an event sequence you can explain

A practical report can follow this sequence: referral from the post, meaningful website action, enquiry, qualification, proposal and completed deal. This is a model for a particular sales process; agree its stages with the team. A subscription, document download and enquiry should not all be called a lead if they require different actions from sales.

Use agreed campaign tags on external links you control. Track internal navigation as separate events while preserving the enquiry's original source. Give each form submission an identifier that reaches the CRM. It helps establish whether the analytics event and the salesperson's record concern the same enquiry.

Submitting a form does not confirm commercial suitability. Keep distinct qualification reasons: a relevant problem, a reachable contact, market fit and a possible next conversation. Rejection reasons also need specificity. “Does not convert” mixes together no demand, the wrong region, duplicates and a delayed team response.

Systems that import external events can technically connect a later outcome with a visit. For example, Yandex Metrica's offline conversion documentation describes submitting a visitor identifier, goal and event time, then checking matching status. Having this mechanism does not mean every deal was matched.

Where the report can mislead

The first risk is timing. This week's enquiries may still be in negotiations, while completed deals relate to earlier posts. Treating them as one period is misleading. Follow groups defined by first contact and show how many enquiries remain open.

The second risk is combining channels. Someone may watch a video, return through search and contact the company in a messenger. Website analytics sees only the available touchpoints. Asking how the customer heard about the company adds information without reconstructing the full journey. Preserve an unknown source rather than distributing it among channels for a tidy report.

The third risk is operational. An enquiry may be suitable, but sales replied late or failed to assign it. Changing the creative addresses a different problem. Examine the time to the first meaningful response, unfinished enquiries and reasons for stopping at each stage.

Use the findings to decide what to change

Start with the clearest loss. Referrals but few enquiries call for checking whether the landing page meets expectations and the form is accessible. Many unsuitable enquiries call for reviewing the audience, promise and qualification. Enough suitable contacts but few proposals call for reviewing sales and handoffs.

Compare content with the same role, similar placement conditions and its full production cost. Views cannot be compared directly with deals from another group without a common observation period. With little data, an accurate account of a few enquiries is more useful than a ranking based on a chance percentage.

The technical foundation can be discussed as part of CRM integration. The GoHighLevel project description shows the components of a connected customer journey, but measured sales growth has not been established. Your company's outcome criteria need its own event log and agreed stages.

Locate the handoff after an enquiry

At Dent-Picks, I implemented lead creation in GoHighLevel after an incoming IVR call and an employee leaderboard covering 15 quantity and quality measures. This work connects an enquiry with team operations. It does not establish that social engagement increases sales, but it illustrates the next step to make visible: the enquiry needs to enter a system where someone continues handling it.

My guide to connecting documents, CRM and tasks explains how to check that handoff before calculating conversion rates. A stable identifier, defined retry and visible failure also matter for a social enquiry. Otherwise, part of the funnel measures data transfer quality rather than marketing performance.
