From summer 2023 to spring 2024 I worked on Quote Finder for a consulting company in London. The tool took an article by its link, found the quote in it and produced screenshots and video of that exact spot, with the quote highlighted in yellow and centred on screen. It is one of the projects described on the Software development for a London consultancy, 2023–2024 page.
The task
Copying a quote from an article is easy. Showing it in the original, so you can see where it sits and how it looks on the publisher's page, is harder. By hand, each quote takes several steps: open the article, find the passage, highlight it, capture the screen and save the file.
We worked directly from article links.
What came out
This was a really interesting part. The tool opened the article, found the quote, highlighted it in yellow and brought it to the centre, so it caught the eye straight away. Google can do that, and so can I.
The output was screenshots and video of that part of the article. They show the publication, the page design and the text around the quote, so the source can be checked at a glance. Finished files were saved to Google Drive.
How it worked
Everything ran on a Google server. The page was opened by headless Chrome, a browser without a window, so the article rendered much as a reader would see it. Puppeteer drove the browser: load the article from the link, find the passage, highlight it, scroll so the quote sat in the middle, then capture a screenshot or video.
Have a similar task?
If you need to capture, check or archive web pages and fragments of them automatically, I handle that kind of work under workflow automation and API integrations. In the same engagement I built Scraper Hub, a service that collected news from many websites. The other projects are on the Software development for a London consultancy, 2023–2024 page.
